A few minutes ago, I was drawn into doing some quick review and skim over the 7th book of Harry Potter (the Deathly Hallows). Then I read the very last sentence in the epilogue: All was Well. After pondering upon it for a few minutes, I realized it has a deeper meaning than it is.
Instead of writing "they lived happily after", this sentence was chosen as a the ultimate closure. This, in my opinion, was a smart and realistic decision by JKR. Harry would never live happily ever after. He lived through most of his teenage life with near-death experiences. There's definitely a long term side effect to that. Not to mention in this world, nobody, including Harry, will be having a good time every single second.
Then why everything was viewed as "well"? Because no matter what happened in the past, Harry still walked away as the boy who lived. He might still will be having the ups and downs of life, but he already conquered his biggest battle. Holistically speaking, Harry Potter has done a well lived life.
Let's take this matter back to the non-fictional world. Reading this sentence made me rethink about the purpose of life. Wouldn't it be wonderful when we lie down on our deathbed later on--knowing the end is approaching-- we could replay some of our life highlights in mind, smile :), and say to ourselves: All was Well.
